Assignment 2: Scope and Time Management


This assignment is due for online students by midnight on Sunday of Week 4 and for on-ground students before Week 5’s class meeting. Submit your assignment to the course shell.


You are to submit your assignment in two parts. First, create a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) by using a project management tool such as Microsoft Project or Open Project (.mpp format) and secondly, summarize your assignment in MS Word or equivalent.


Overview: As the IT Project Manager, you have been assigned a project to deploy ten (10) wireless access points in your company’s warehouse and break room within the next ninety (90) days. You are free to make assumptions that satisfy the scope of the project such as training, wiring, consulting efforts, etc.



Your submission will also be graded on the accuracy of your work package assumptions and duration estimates.


In your assignment, address the following:

Create 15 or more decomposed work packages into 4 levels that are assigned to 5 or more main tasks (75 line items). (MS Project) Ensure the main WBS tasks headings are the 5 PMBOK® process areas. (MS Project) Create a Work Breakdown Structure Code for each task. (MS Project) Determine an overall project duration and duration estimates for each of the tasks. The duration is not to exceed 90 days. (MS Project) Create accurate work package assumptions and duration estimates. (MS Project) Summarize in one to two (1 or 2) paragraphs how this activity improves the chances of your future IT project being a success. (MS Word or equivalent) Use at least one (1) quality resource in this assignment.


The format of the report is to be as follows:

Typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman font (size 12), one-inch margins on all sides, citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. Microsoft Project or its open source alternative in .mpp format. Type the question followed by your answer to the question. Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

Identify how project management improves the success of information technology projects. Explain the relationship of the scope of a project to the work breakdown structure. Use technology and information resources to research issues in IT project management. Write clearly and concisely about issues in IT project management using proper writing mechanics.
